Martin Winkler's trammed canvases look as though they were painted with wool.  The pattern is created by horizontal stitches which you then stitch over with a half cross stitch in the same colour wool.  The horizontal stitches give a guide to the shape and colour of the design.  And by using a great many colours, the finished tapestry is more detailed and harder wearing than a printed canvas.  Fine details like faces and hands are already stitches in petit point.  The trammed canvases always come with a generous amount of wool to stitch the pattern.
